Symbols for Christ
IHS

A monogram of the name JESUS.

Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
(John 16:23)

Different interpretations of IHS :-

1. It is from the first two letters and last letter (iota, eta, and sigma)
    of the Greek name of Jesus, IHSOYS
    Greek -Jesus Christ  (most probable)

2. It is from the letters of the Latin name of Jesus, IHESUS

3. Some erroneously say (in the Middle Ages) that the three letters are the initials of
    *  "Iesus Hominum (or Hierosolymae) Salvator"
         which means Jesus Saviour of Men, or of Jerusalem=Hierosolyma
    *  "In Hoc Signo (vinces)"
        which means in this sign (thou shalt conquer),
    *  "In Hac Salus"
        which means in this (cross) is salvation

Seal of the Society of Jesus

St. Ignatius of Loyola adopted this monogram in his seal as general of the Society of Jesus (1541), and thus it became the emblem of his religious order.
